The Brown Roll Rim: Paxillus involutus

This mushroom contains a toxin that can be neutralised by lengthy boiling and discarding the water several times but this does not remove other toxins that can build up in the body over time and eventually lead to a rather nasty death. It is eaten in certain parts of Eastern Europe but still leads to deaths every year there. Definitely a mushroom to avoid.

Despite having gills this mushroom is closer related to Boletes (mushrooms with pores) than other gilled mushrooms.
How to Use Brown Roll-Rim in Spellwork
Banishing & Protection Spells
• Symbol: Use a dried cap or photo to represent something you want to remove or repel (e.g., toxic people, habits, or spiritual intrusions).
• Method: Place it in a jar or pouch with baneful herbs (e.g., wormwood, thistle) and bury at a crossroads or beneath a thorn bush.
Warding & Curses
• Use the mushroom as a focal object in curse work or protective magic that creates a spiritual barrier.
• Write the name of the target on paper, place under the mushroom, and perform ritual actions (chanting, binding, etc.).
Spirit Work or Death Magic
• Due to its toxicity and association with decay, it could be used in spells related to communing with spirits, ancestral work, or honoring endings.
• Place on ancestor altars (safely contained) or use in meditations about mortality or transition.
Don’t forget that this mushroom is deadly so care must be used when handling it and never bring it in to a space where children and pets may ingest.
